What makes a good teacher? For all the effort that has gone into analyzing and breaking down its processes, teaching is not an exact science. According to Scott Holley, being a good teacher boils down to successfully translating theory into real-world situations. Becoming the Teacher You Wish You d Had, a mix of philosophy, memoir, and practical advice from Holley and other teachers with years of classroom experience, offers examples of this translation through stories of great lessons, failures to connect, and days of laughter. Holley addresses the issue of what it means to be an ideal teacher one who has the flexibility and insight to reach each student and to inspire them to want to learn while ensuring that becoming the teacher you wish you'd had only takes a mind open to the possibilities.

Becoming the Teacher You Wish You'd Had Scott Holley 9781612481906 Books

Every teacher — no matter if they teach kindergarten or grad school — should read this book carefully and reflectively. It is a superb discussion about what it takes to help a teacher go from good to great. It should be a textbook in every educator training program, and it should be on every teacher’s summer reading list. If you could only buy one book for a teacher, this is it.

Reading this book is like watching a highlight reel of a great classroom teacher’s most memorable highlights, bloopers, failures, and quotes from a storied career in education. The master teacher is sharing all of his best stuff. Scott Holley has loads of personal experience in secondary school classrooms, but he does not rely solely on his own interesting experiences. He blends dozens of personal interviews with some of the nation's best classroom teachers with quotes from the world’s most renowned educators, authors, and researchers. He tells stories that shocking, funny, touching, and cringe-worthy.

As a teacher, it is humbling to read this book. I have been teaching for 24 years, and this book exposed all my shortcomings. In fact, I felt sheer embarrassment at times. However, Holley is equally encouraging that you can improve. He inspires change and gives specific ideas about how to do so. It is a highly practical book, written the way all college textbooks should be (but so few are). After one reading, my copy is all dog-eared and underlined. This book is for all those teachers who know that they can be better, which is all of us.

Becoming the Teacher You Wish You'd Had Scott Holley 9781612481906 Books Reviews

As someone who has been teaching for 20+ years, I found this book to be the most enjoyable and helpful book on teaching that I have ever read. While it is an enjoyable read with some pretty hilarious anecdotes, Holley's book is also packed with education's latest proven facts and findings, practical ideas and inspirational quotes. Not a wasted page or paragraph can be found here. If you are a teacher, you need to read this book.
There are many good books on education, but this is not one of them. It is a great book. What makes it great? (1) It isn’t simply one interesting idea repackaged & repeated 14 different ways – the bane of most books on education – rather, it contains a wealth of useful ideas. (2) It stands at the intersection of educational philosophy & practice and provides ample opportunity to reflect deeply about both. (3) It is well written. Sadly, many books on education simply aren’t. In short, I can’t recommend it enough. A must read for any educator.
I just finished reading Scott's book. Of the many books and articles that I have read about teaching/learning over the years, this one ranks near the top. Scott has combined quotes from master teachers and from the most renowned educational thinkers with his own anecdotes and stories. He gets to the heart of what is important in teaching in a way that is specific, practical and succinct. I recommend this book to all teachers and administrators whether they are new to the profession or have many years of experience. A building or district which adopts this as a reading for the staff and utilizes his main points can become a much better place for kids and adults.
The subtitle says it all. This feels like a heart to heart conversation with an old friend. Though Scott Holley has been in the classroom for over 40 years, he is still exceedingly passionate about mentoring new teachers and inspiring veterans. His words contain just the right combination of humility and humor to encourage a beginning teacher on those miserable Fridays when the week has gone poorly and enough thoughtful academic discourse to spark lively conversations among experienced teachers regarding the "whats, so whats, and now whats" of their daily work. Read this book. I guarantee you will walk away with new ideas about teaching and learning!
Just gave a copy to the Vice Principal at my daughter's school. The personal examples Scott Holley provides as well as a valuable collection of teaching experience provided by scores of expert educators makes this an encouraging, inspiring and challenging look at the call to be a teacher. Our school is really looking at how to engage students in the "conversation" of learning and Mr. Holley gave practical ideas for teachers to better connect with students and their subject matter. Humor and levity throughout the book brought his strategies to life and made room for teachers to grow as they teach and not feel pressured to have it all figured out a the beginning of a career. Great book. Just ordered 2 more for other teachers I know!!!!
Dr. Holley does an excellent job outlining the difficulties of teaching and then delineating approaches and techniques to overcome these difficulties. The text emphasizes the teacher's responsibility to engage students in a "Conversation", involve them in a topic and help them maximize their classroom experience. Each chapter concludes with a list of suggested reflections and actions that are powerful in their ability to elicit specific strategies and tactics a teacher can employ in their unique classroom environments.

Reflections and examples of colleagues and acquaintances with hundreds of years of teaching experience are interspersed throughout the book. These add to an already enjoyable reading experience and further illustrate what does and doesn't work in the classroom. This book helped me understand the difficulties my son is encountering in trying to become a teacher. I would highly recommend it for anyone embarking upon a career in teaching.
